8 NCAA Gymnasts to Watch in 2016

Tis the season to be jolly, with NCAA gymnastics that is. Every year there's bound to be new girls rising up to the scene, whether they be returners or freshmen that are new to the scene. Oh what fun it is to speculate and predict these girls. Especially if you're playing fantasy gym, it's good to be weary of girls up and coming, like I did last year with Nicole Artz. That was a good move, if I do say so myself. So, without further adieu, I present to you gymnasts to watch for this season.

1. Sabrina Schwab, Utah
Sabrina is a freshman at Utah who hails from WOGA (do I need say more?). From first glance you immediately notice her elegance, poise, and lines. Her bars are absolutely gorgeous (those lines though), and also usually pretty well executed. While her beam seemed nervy at the Red Rocks Preview, I expect her to emerge once season starts, as she's been a good beam worker in the past. She has great presence on floor. Her tumbling is solid and her dance elements are great and poised with that WOGA elegance and grace. With the senior class that Utah lost this year, I expect her as well as the other freshmen to emerge and take on roles on the team. (Note: I tried to find videos from the more recent Red Rocks Preview, but Utah, or anyone else haven't posted any of her)

2. Lizzy LeDuc, Illinois
The "I'm going to LSU, wait nevermind, I'm going to Illinois" girl has arrived on the scene. Previously a highly touted LSU commit, something went wrong and there was a miscommunication, so she changed her commit to Illinois. This is wonderful for Illinois, as I (as well as many other gymnerds) see her as a star in the making, and at Illinois she should shine brighter than ever. She had a stint as a junior international elite in the US from 2009-2010, but dropped down to level 10 after an elbow injury in 2011. More recently, she trained and competed internationally for the Philippines from 2014 until she came to Illinois in 2015. That alone is the makings of a great NCAA gymnast. Lizzy has a solid skillset, hailing from WOGA, though she switched to Metroplex. She could easily contribute to the Illini on all four events, especially beam, which is beautiful. Her floor is solid as well, going back to her US elite days, and it should just improve. I'm excited to see all she can contribute to the Illini these next  4 years. It should be great!

3. Maddy Stover, Utah
A sophomore, Maddy is looking to make an impact. Due to a minor injury, she only competed beam last season, but she had that fixed with a surgery in the offseason and is ready to go for the season. She has added events and is looking to contribute more than just beam this year, though beam is her specialty event. With the senior class Utah lost, they will be looking for new contributors to emerge, and Maddy is part of this group. Whatever happens, she will definitely compete on beam, where she is excellent and rock solid, and definitely could contribute on bars or any other event. (This beam routine tallied a 9.9)

4. Natalie Brown, Oklahoma
Natalie is a sophomore at OU. While she didn't make lineups at first, she filled in at times and also made a few at the end of the season and made a splash, posting solid scores. She has that beautiful WOGA style, and will likely have a chance on beam and floor. She's a very clean gymnast and will score big, and with upgraded tumbling, she could become even more of a force to be recoked with this year and in years to come.

5. Rachel Stypinski, Kent State
Don't be mistaken by the school. Rachel, a sophomore, is much bigger than that. A beam and floor specialist, she had a rocky start to her freshman year (who can blame her? College and college gymnastics is definitely an adjustment) but by the end of the season she was earning 9.9s on beam and floor consistently. With one year of experience behind her, expect her to be great from the start and continue the success she had as a freshman. She is definitely worth looking for!

6. Sydney Snead, Georgia
Sydney is a power gymnast and she shines on vault and floor. She has a yurchenko 3/2 on vault, which should be a great asset for Georgia once she gets back to full strength after an injury (she did perform at the Sneak Peek, so she should be close to ready for season). She should definitely compete on vault and floor her freshman year, but don't count her out on doing the all around. Her bars, for example, are also generally good, featuring almost everything you could want in a bars routine.

This vault also earned a 10, despite the tiny step in place

7. Stacie Webb, Southern Utah
Stacie shines on beam, where she shows confidence and security, and she is also great on floor and has hit 9.9 on vault in her career. She definitely has great basics, hailing from Gym-Max, and it is shown in her gymnastics. It's a shame that the Thunderbirds don't get more publicity, as this junior and this team is not to be counted out for a spot at regionals, where last year they almost pulled off an upset to make nationals at their regional.

8. Olivia Karas, Michigan
Olivia has a storied club career. She's been a star at JO Nationals and the Nastia Liukin Cup. She especially thrives on vault and floor, but don't count her out on the other events (see UB here and BB here), as she's likely to compete all around this year to help fill in the routines Michigan lost from Sugiyama and co. She has a beautiful yurchenko 3/2 on vault that has scored well in the past and will definitely be an asset to the Wolverines with the new start values on vault. In addition, her tumbling is sky high and features a double arabian.

She made her collegiate debut this weekend at the Cancun Classic, and it's safe to say she made a huge splash (39.475 AA behind Artz's 39.525) and I can't wait to see the rest of her freshman year unfold.
